Rustic Wooden American Flags

Overview

Flag Materials:

The wood I use for my flags is Pine wood making the flag strong and lightweight. It also has a very distinct and highly attractive grain.

The stain for the Flag is Minwax water base wood stain, which really pronounces the grain in the pine and gives it a rich look.

For polyurethane I use Helmsmen Spar urethane. This poly gives a beautiful glow to my flags, and provides an excellent protective finish.

On the back of the flag I use two eye hook screws, and a sturdy rope. The rope blends well with the flag giving it a more rustic look.

The materials holding all of this together are strips of wood, weather/water proof wood glue, and brad nails.

Assembly of the Flag:

The first step of making my flags is to cut and shape the pine wood into strips of wood.

Once cut and shaped I evenly torch each strip of wood pronouncing the grain.

After the Flag is torched I stain the Flag with the decided colors.

Next, I assemble the flag with four back braces, glued and brad nailed to the back, making a very sturdy build.

Following, I torch the back of the flag just too add to its rustic flair.

Once assembled I than hand-carve the flag which I believe is the most important step in making the flag, being hand-carved really gives a flag character.

I then poly the entire flag with heavy duty polyurethane sealing the flag, creating a smooth surface, and providing a beautiful natural glow.

And finally, I tie sturdy rope between two eye hook screws attached to the back of the flag for secure mounting.
